How to Say Thanks in Spanish

Just like many other cultures across the world, showing appreciation or expressing gratitude to someone is proper etiquette in Spanish culture. A common phrase used to express gratitude is gracias meaning thanks in Spanish.

Gracias – The Spanish greeting phrase gracias is often said to express a grateful feeling, acknowledge a favor, or show appreciation of a benefit or kind gesture expressed to you by someone. Even though both Gracias can mean either Thank You or Thanks in Spanish, however, Thanks is often considered an informal way to express gratitude.

Other Situations to Say Thanks
Apart from saying Gracias to tell someone that you’re grateful for something they have done for you or given you, Spanish culture also allows you to say Thanks in other situations. However, if you will like to indicate what you are saying thanks for, you can use the preposition “por” meaning for.

Few Examples of when to say Thanks in Spanish
To show appreciation or express gratitude:
Thank you for the gift. – “Gracias por el regalo.”
Thank you for your help. – “Gracias por tu ayuda.”
Thank you very much. – “Muchas gracias.”

When you’re receiving a compliment:
Thanks, I’m happy you liked my gift. – “Gracias, estoy feliz de que te haya gustado mi regalo.”

When you’re running late
Sorry, I’m late. Thanks for your patience. – “Lo siento, llego tarde. Gracias por su paciencia.”

When you receive helpful feedback
Thanks for your suggestion. – “Gracias por tu sugerencia.”

When you receive unfair criticism
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ll try to improve. – “Gracias por compartir tus pensamientos. Intentaré mejorar.”
