The trail is 11 miles long and features a moderate difficulty level. This makes it ideal for experienced hikers as well as those just starting out their outdoor adventures. The South Plateau Loop Trail begins at Little River Canyon National Preserve Visitor Center near Fort Payne, AL. From there it winds its way down into Little River Canyon before climbing up onto Lookout Mountain’s plateau top where you’ll find spectacular views of the surrounding countryside below.

Along this section you will also encounter several caves which are home to bats during certain times of year so be sure to keep an eye out! After traveling along some forested ridgelines traversing deep ravines and crossing streams, you will eventually reach your destination back at the Visitor Center after completing a full loop around Lookout Mountain’s southern face. The South Plateau Loop Trail offers something for everyone who loves nature – whether they’re looking for a challenging hike or just want to take in the breathtaking scenery while enjoying some fresh air away from civilization.

With its varied terrain and stunning vistas, this trail is definitely worth checking out if you’re ever near Huntsville or Fort Payne!
