Greater Cleveland Aquarium

By

One of the best aquariums in Ohio is the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. Known for it’s rich history, the facility boasts over 50 marine exhibits in 8 main areas making it a full day of exploration of aquatic life. There aren’t many aquariums with such a wide variety of ocean mammals so if you are visiting Cleveland, this is a must stop during your travels.

History of Greater Cleveland Aquarium

The original facility was opened back in 1954, replacing a building that was previously a bathhouse. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History helped to operate the aquatic center and featured 50 marine exhibits which included octopus, sharks, ells, and a variety of coral reefs. At the time it was still a fairly small building and often had to turn away visitors. In 1967 the Cleveland Aquarium received a generous gift allowing them to almost triple the size of their tanks moving from 8,000 gallons of water to over 82,000. Unfortunately the building had structural problems and in 1985 they had to close the aquatic facility to the public. The following year they were able to move the marine life to the local zoo until 2012 when the Greater Cleveland Aquarium was opened.

Greater Cleveland Aquarium Exhibits

Located in the FirstEnergy Powerhouse building in the flats district of Cleveland, this 70,000sq foot facility has truly transformed the city into a travel destination. 55 exhibits help feature both local marine life and world wild exotic fish. The building premier attraction is the 175ft shark tunnel with breathtaking views of all the marine life. The main exhibits you can enjoy are:

  • Ohio Lakes & Rivers
  • Lakes & Rivers of the World
  • Discovery Zone
  • Indo-Pacific
  • Northern Pacific
  • Coastal
  • Coral Reef
  • Shark SeaTube

Schools in the Cleveland area can also schedule field trips to view the cities main aquarium. They also host a ton of events so check out their website to see what days are perfect for you and your family.
