Goodbye is a common phrase used in every country when ending a conversation with another person. In the Czech language, there are several ways to say goodbye depending on the situation and formality. Here are some of the most commonly used phrases for saying goodbye in Czech:
How to Say Goodbye in Czech
Na shledanou – “See you” This phrase is formal but can be used when speaking with family or friends. It literally means “until we meet again” and is often followed by shaking hands if appropriate.
Na viděnou – “Until next time” This phrase is also quite formal and usually implies you’ll see them again very soon. A good use case would be after a business meeting.
Mějte se hezky – “Take care” This phrase has a similar meaning to na shledanou though it does not necessarily imply that another meeting will take place in the near future. It can be said as an informal way of expressing good wishes before parting ways.
Nashledanou! – “Farewell!” Nashledanou is less formal than either na shledanou or na viděnou and could even be considered slangy among younger generations of speakers. Its literal translation means something like “see ya”.
Ahoj! – “Hi/Bye” Ahoj! Is probably one of the most commonly heard phrases in all contexts, both casual and more formal situations throughout Czech-speaking countries today. Its literal translation means “hello!” but it’s also widely accepted as an informal way of saying goodbye too.
Sbohem – “Goodbye” The direct translation for sbohem would simply mean “goodbye”. Unlike nashledanou!, this term carries no connotations whatsoever so it can safely be used regardless of context.
Nazdar / Cau / Čau – these three words have very similar meanings (“hi”) but they’re mostly reserved for situations where you won’t need any further conversation such as passing someone on a walk.
