Some even prefer it as they are more refreshed in the morning to start their daily activities such as hiking or rafting. Here are some of our favorite RV and Glamping Campgrounds in Wisconsin.

Guide to Camping in Wisconsin

With all the primitive areas throughout Wisconsin to camp, it’s important to make a quick checklist of everything you need. Remember most places will only be accessible by backpack so it’s important you only bring what you need. Here are just a few main essentials and gear to make sure you survive the wilderness.

  • Clothing and shoes for all types of weather – Assume that during your trip it will rain at least once. However many days you plan on camping, make sure you pack at least one extra article of clothing (socks, underwear, shorts/pants, and shirt/jacket). You may find a lake or hot spring on your adventure you want to jump into, or a cold night with no fire. Having the right gear will make your camping trip all the more better.
  • Tent – We can’t tell you how many times people have gone camping and forget their tent or poles. You get so excited for your adventure, pack up all your gear and food, and leave one of the most important items at home. Make sure you have a good tent that suits Wisconsin’s environment. You may need an all season tent if you plan on camping year round. Also consider the size and how many people will be sleeping with you. The tent is basically your home in the woods so don’t skimp on quality.
  • Sleeping Bag and Pad – A good sleeping bag and pad are essential gear when camping in Wisconsin. The state is known for it’s cold nights so check the temperature rating of your sleeping bag and make sure it meets your needs. As far as a pad, most these days are insulated to save body heat. Consider it like a mattress for your bed. You can check the R-Value to determine the best pad for you.
  • Cooler for Food and Drinks – This may be a little tricker if you are backpacking to a primitive area, but you need something that will keep any perishables cold. For car campers, the cooler is the essential way to store enough beer to last the weekend. Most coolers are now built to hold ice for several days making it much easier to bring more frozen foods for a epic breakfast or dinner.
  • Lighting – Outside of a fire, you will need some time of lighting to see at nighttime. Most people prefer the headlamp as it allows you to keep your hands free to perform whatever task is at hand. A lantern is also useful for your tent as it will illuminate the inside.
  • Bathroom Essentials – Assuming there are no restrooms in the area, make sure to bring the right gear to perform all types of bowel movements. Toilet paper, shovel, and hand sanitizer are usually the top 3 choices.
  • Trash Bags – Every campers motto should be “leave it as you found it”. Be respectful of the land and clean up after yourself.

There are a lot more items you can bring to make your adventure more enjoyable, but the above list are must haves. Camping chairs are another pretty important item, but optional as it isn’t easy to carry if you are going primitive camping.

Wisconsin a beautiful state and meant to be explored. The next time you need something to do over the weekend, consider grabbing your gear and setting off for an adventure with you and mother nature. A couple days away from your cell phone and tv/computer is a good thing and will leave you feeling more relaxed and ready to head back into the real world. Happy Camping!
