McCredie Hot Springs is located 8 miles east of Oakridge. Bordered by the Willamette Pass Highway on one end, the site has several hot springs available for open soaking during the daytime. The temperature of the pool often fluctuates, and sometimes, they can be quite hot, so be careful when you dip in. Wide and shallow, the bottom of the hot pools is covered by silt. Rocks border each pool, over which water gushes to create a picturesque landscape.
The springs are located within the borders of the Willamette National Forest.
General Information
If you want to visit McCredie Hot Springs, do so during the daytime. Though they are open throughout the year, they are only accessible during the day. Entry is free. Clothing is optional in the area.
The pools, bordering the Salt Creek, have an average temperature between 98oF or 36oC and 114oF or 45oC. But sometimes, they can be as hot as 130oF or 54oC, so be careful when stepping in. The hot temperatures offer a natural healing experience. The largest pool is nearly 35 feet wide and the smallest pool is spread only across 3 feet. The depth of the pools is around 2 feet on average.
The springs can be accessed via the Oregon State Route 58 from Oakridge. Travel for around 8 miles until you reach the parking lot, close to the campsite. Should you want to access pools on the southern side, you will have to travel 0.5 miles further towards the eastern side from the parking lot. You will have to cross a bridge and then park your car in a pullout. From here, you’ll have to hike along unnamed trails until you reach the banks.
The water at McCredie Hot Springs is sourced from nearby springs that are heated by underground magma deposits. This mineral-rich water has been known to have therapeutic benefits such as easing muscle tension, providing relief from stress, boosting immunity and improving circulation.
The main attraction at McCredie Hot Springs is its large pool area with several smaller soaking tubs scattered around it. Some of these tubs can accommodate up to four people while others are suitable only for single occupancy. Visitors also have access to changing rooms with showers and restrooms located nearby so they can freshen up after a long soak in one of the many relaxing pools at this scenic spot. Amenities
Restrooms are available on site. An enclosed area with a paved surface is used as a parking lot. Space is limited. Only 9 vehicles and an RV truck with a length of 40 feet can be accommodated in the parking lot. Picnic tables are available in the parking lot, but tents cannot be pitched up during the night in the areas surrounding the springs.
Accommodation
Overnight camping is not allowed near the spring, but accommodation is available at nearby sites. The closest of these is the Blue Pool Campground.
What Else Should You Know
• The area isn’t as developed as other hot springs in Oregon, so take all the necessities including food and water with you if you visit McCredie Hot Springs.
• Follow the ‘what you pack in, you pack out’ principle here as well
• If you have rough or dry skin, you should definitely visit McCredie Hot Springs because they are rich in silica and sulfur. These compounds can treat various skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema.
• The springs also contain magnesium and calcium. Magnesium improves muscular health and treats arthritis and other similar conditions. Sodium bicarbonate and calcium improve circulation in the body.
