When people ask the locals of Idaho where to go to enjoy a great soak and fun day, most will tell them to head over to Lava Hot Springs. As one of the oldest hot springs in the state, it’s theme park vibe with slides gives almost a waterpark feeling, while still getting to enjoy an amazing soak in natural mineral waters.

There are five different hot springs pools that make up the entire outdoor facility. There facility has over 2.5 million gallons of fresh natural mineral waters that flow through the park daily to keep the waters crystal clear and clean. No chemicals are ever used because of the amount of fresh water. The springs then flows into Portneuf River where it continues its journey through the state of Idaho.

The temperature of the outdoor pools are fairly hot, ranging in temperatures between 102 and 112 degrees. There is also no sulfur smell or any odor for that matter from the natural springs. You can enjoy a relaxing soak or enjoy the water slides, diving area, or a nice swim in the Olympic size pool (containing a million gallons of water!).

Lava hot springs olympic swimming complex also has an amazing indoor facility with a pool, Kiddie Cove, water cannons and sprays, and plenty of toys to keep everyone entertained. The pool is almost 30 yards long with 6 different lanes for those who want to get a quick workout in. The pools are a little cooler for the kids at an average temperature of 92 degrees. Unlike the outdoor facility which is open seasonally, the indoor area is year round. There is also lockers, a snack shack, gift shop, and dressing rooms for use. There are also party rental options if you want to celebrate a birthday.

For a little more fun, we highly recommend you rent a tube and head down the Portneuf River. It’s a great float and a nice break from the hot springs for a couple hours.

The waterpark is roughly a two hour drive from Salt Lake City so plan on heading out early or finding nearby overnight accommodations to avoid wasting too much time on the road and not enough soaking in the springs.
