Smathers Beach – Key West, Florida

By

Smathers Beach is a 2 mile stretch of sand on the southern end of Key West. This beach is known far and wide as a popular destination as it is one of the most extensive white sand beaches in all of the Keys.

Because the surf and storms peel away the precious sand, it needs to be nourished from time to time, and if you ask the locals, it all comes from the Caribbean! But don’t worry that there isn’t enough space to lounge by the calm waters. There is plenty of areas to pull a chair into and take in the tropical vibes.

This beach also features plenty of beachside amenities. Its location is also great because it runs alongside US Highway 1. This means that on a busy, sunny day, you can expect to find food trucks and vendors popping up shop to entice beachgoers with some delicious food and fun beach gear rentals.

The water itself, much like most of The Florida Keys, is shallow and clear. While you may not be able to get out deep into the surf, you can still wade into the shallows and enjoy the warm turquoise surf. Make sure you bring your snorkeling gear, too, as this location is prime for sighting some extraordinary marine life.

Activities

Swimming, kayaking, volleyball, snorkeling, sunbathing, and paddle boarding are also ample places to rent water sports gear.

When you get to the beach, you’ll see the army of lounge chairs and umbrellas set up along the shore. Because the water is somewhat shallow and can have a rocky bottom, most people tend to relax on the sand and let the sun and the swaying coconut palms set the mood.

Because the water is so calm, it can be a perfect place for children to spend some time in the water. Just make sure that you have some water shoes.

Amenities

Bathrooms, showers, picnic areas, free parking, and volleyball courts. You can also find plenty of places to rent beach gear, so if you left your umbrella at home, don’t fret.

Snorkelers can enjoy the swimming zone, just offshore.

While chair and umbrella rentals are abundant, if you feel a tad more adventurous, you can even rent a jet ski or a catamaran.

Nearby Attractions

Since Smathers Beach is located just a few miles from the central point of Key West, you can certainly expect to find some fantastic off-beach activities.

If you want to indulge in the area’s literary history, make sure to check out The Hemingway Home and Museum. Here you can bask in the prolific writer’s former home and even catch a glimpse of the famous six-toed cats that call the area home.

Fun Facts

Smathers Beach is one of the few beaches on the Key that are owned by the city. This means that the beach’s maintenance and upkeep are regularly taken care of, helping this spit of sand stay open for all to enjoy.
