Paralana Radioactive Hot Springs

Paralana Hot Springs

By

We don’t recommend jumping in, but Paralana hot springs is still a great attraction to go see while hiking around Wooltana, just north of Arkaroola. It’s the only hot springs left on the Paralana fault and as the water comes up from the earth it passes through Mount Painter which contains high amounts of radioactive chemicals.

Back in the early 1900’s this spring was a very popular tourist destination as the radioactive thermal bathe was considered very healing and people would come for a spa day. However, this only took a few years to realize it put people at risk and the today it’s more of a place for pictures. The hot spring itself does pump out at roughly 57 degrees Celsius and has constant bubbles omitting gas.

If you plan on going on an adventure around Arkaroola, make sure to take the time to come check out Paralana hot springs and their hydrothermal activity. There have been many studies on this area to figure out the relationship between fossils and groundwater. You don’t have to be a scientist though to enjoy it’s beauty and surrounding scenery.
