Kootenai Falls is a spectacular landmark located on the Kootenai River in northwestern Montana. The falls are part of the larger Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, and have long been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The falls are actually made up of two separate drops that occur over a distance of about 1,500 feet.

The lower drop is approximately 15 feet high while the upper one is around 35 feet tall. Both drops feature beautiful cascades as they plunge into the river below. It’s possible to walk along both sections of the falls to get an even better view of them from different angles, although some areas may be slippery so caution should be taken when doing this!
The area around Kootenai Falls has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 BCE and was home to various Native American tribes such as the Salish-Kootenai people until Europeans arrived in 1805. Today it remains an important cultural site for many local tribes who come here for ceremonies or simply take pleasure in its beauty and tranquility year round. In addition to being visually stunning, Kootena Falls serves several other purposes – most notably providing habitat for fish species like rainbow trout which thrive in its cold waters; supplying drinking water downstream; contributing sediment deposition which helps maintain healthy riparian habitats; generating hydroelectric power through nearby dams (which also provide irrigation); and offering recreational opportunities such as fishing, kayaking/canoeing, swimming, bird watching etc.
This scenic spot is easily accessible via road from Libby or Troy (both within 30 minutes driving time), making it an ideal day trip destination if you’re visiting northwest Montana or just looking for something special close by! So whether you’re seeking adventure or simply want to enjoy nature’s wonders – make sure you check out Kootenai Falls next time you’re in town!
