Founders Park is an expansive recreational facility located on Islamorada, which includes a popular beach-side spot for locals and visitors. The waters are much like other beaches in the area: shallow and clear. The location is excellent for snorkelers and swimmers, but Founders Park is much more than just a beach.
Housed inside the grounds, you can find access to some fantastic recreational amenities. There is plenty of green space to pull up a blanket, have a picnic, and even an amphitheater that hosts events throughout the year.
Even though the park is home to many fun activities, the beach is undoubtedly the highlight of this area. The palm tree-lined stretch of white sand is the perfect location to take the family for a day of fun and sun.
Several parks make up the island’s recreational village parks, but Founders is certainly the largest and most well-trafficked.
Activities
Swimming, sunbathing, volleyball, basketball, baseball, paddlesports, and lots more beachside fun.
The park also features an Olympic sized swimming pool. This is an excellent place if you want to spend some time swimming in deeper water as the water beach-side tends to be shallow and not great for deep water swimming.
However, it is perfect for snorkeling or boat sports like taking out one of the Hobie Catamarans available for rent by the beach.
Amenities
Bathrooms, picnic areas, showers, outdoor grills, a golf range, a dog park, a great lawn for events, a boat ramp, and a marina are housed inside the park.
The facilities that sit behind the beach area are huge, 45-acres in fact, and house many amenities you might not expect from a beach park. You can spend an entire day here without getting bored.
Nearby Attractions
If you want to explore a much different type of terrain, then you should make a point to check out The Windley Key Fossil Reef State Park. This former limestone quarry houses some fantastic trails and has several large blocks of limestone rock that display the ecological history of the coral reefs in the area.
You can take a some time to peel back the geological years and get a glimpse of the fossil records that detail the environment that was once active in the Florida Keys’ dense tropical wilderness.
