Curry Hammock State Park Beach – Big Pine Key, Florida

By

In an area teeming with bars, hotels, and human presence, it can be hard to find a paradise secluded from all the development. Curry Hammock State Park is 1,000 acres of uninhabited land that allows guests to take a glimpse into the wilds of the Middle Keys without trekking too far away from the conveniences of civilization.

The park is also a magnificent place to spend the day, with activities like swimming, kayaking, and birdwatching filling the day.

Curry Hammock State Park represents the major efforts to conserve the area’s natural beauty while still allowing a human presence. Enjoy exploring multiple intact ecosystems and participating in the bounty of outdoor activity in the park.

As far as beachside fun goes, Curry Hammock State Park features over 1,200 feet of sandy shores and calm shallow waters.

Activities

Biking, fishing, kayaking, swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, wildlife viewing, and much more is offered in the park.

Paddlesports like kayaking and paddle boarding are phenomenal at Curry Hammock. There is a launch area where you can take your human-powered boats out for the day. The miles of shoreline are lovely to explore and are drenched in mangrove trees, making for a magical experience.

There is also a 1.5-mile nature trail that takes you through some of the park’s ecosystems. The wildlife is teeming, and if you are lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of some unique species of marine life.

Since the park contains some of the least inhabited bits of island in the Keys, you can enjoy some amazing star gazing. The area also hosts several local astronomy clubs throughout the year.

Amenities

The park features outdoor facilities like bathrooms, showers, a playground, and rentable picnic pavilions available for rent.

The park also features plenty of areas to camp out, with around 28 sites available. Most sites feature breathtaking views of the Atlantic and are a great place to spend the night if you want to experience some amazing beach camping.

Nearby Attractions

Just a bit up US Highway 1 on Grassy Key, you’ll find the Dolphin Research Center. The center aims to research, educate, and rescue dolphins. The 90,000 square foot facility houses marine mammals and even some California Sea Lions.

If you want to keep exploring the beaches of the area, head down to Sunset Park. This tiny beach hugs the Atlantic side of Colony Beach and is a great place to have lunch on one of their several picnic tables and benches and take in the amazing view.

Fun Facts

The park is named after a famous Miami teacher Lamar Louise Curry.

Much of the area follows the Overseas Railroad that used to run through the park.

Curry Hammock State Park is home to some of the largest tracks of mangrove swamps and hard rock hammocks for which the park is also named.
