Bill Baggs Cape State Park – Miami, Florida

This truly spectacular beach is located at the tip of Key Biscayne, just a short drive away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami. The stretch of white sand and sun is frequently recognized as one of the best beaches not just in Miami but the entirety of the United States.

Taking a trip to this Florida state park will not only submerge you into the rich natural history of South Florida but will also transport you into the rich cultural heritage of Miami and all the people that have used this spit of sand throughout the centuries.

Activities

Sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, surfing, picnicking, and biking are popular activities on the key.

Bill Baggs Cape State Park is also a popular destination for anglers and plays home to some of the best shoreline fishing in all of Miami-Dade county and hugs the famous Biscaye Seawall.

There is also a fishing pier to discover if you want to take in the views of the Atlantic or just drop a line a little more offshore.

There is also an extensive network of walking and hiking paths in the park. These are not just for pedestrians but can also be a great area to bike if you want a little more speed in your day.

Amenities

Since the beach is located in a state park, you can expect to find tons of amenities.

You can find restrooms, showers, beach gear rentals, a kayak launch, hiking trails, a playground, rentable picnic pavilions, outdoor grills, an onsite museum, an amphitheater, and a good portion of the park is ADA accessible.

There are also plenty of places to explore the rich density of wildlife in the area, with a wide range of viewing areas sprinkled throughout the park and beach. Depending on the time of year, you may get lucky and catch different groups of migratory birds as they pass through the skyline.

There are also a wide variety of gear available for rental. Find bikes, kayaks, and even beach chairs and umbrellas.

This park does come with an admission price, but this is charged per vehicle.

Nearby Attractions

The Cape Lighthouse is the oldest surviving structure in Miami-Dade county. Erected in 1825, this historic landmark is open to the public, and from the top, you can experience some spectacular views of Key Biscayne and the Atlantic Ocean.

Tours are available twice daily at the lighthouse.

If you are looking for a picturesque place to dine, then head over to the Boater’s Grill. This excellent restaurant offers diners fabulous waterfront views and is located inside the park.

Fun Facts

The park played an integral role in the abolitionist movement and has been recognized as a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site.

Cape Florida, for which the lighthouse takes its name, was called that by the famous explorer Ponce de Leon in his first expedition to Florida in the 1500s.
