Helen Hunt Waterfall

Helen Hunt Falls

By

Helen Hunt Falls is one of the more popular attractions in Colorado during spring and summer months. The falls are named after Helen Hunt Jackson, an American writer and activist who wrote extensively about the plight of Native Americans in the late 19th century. For the last 60 years, the falls have been designated as a National Natural Landmark due to their unique geological features.

Details about Helen Hunt Falls

Standing at over 40 feet tall with multiple tiers and rock formations, Helen Hunt Falls is one of the most picturesque waterfalls in North Cheyenne Cañon Park. It is fed by Bear Creek which flows down from Cheyenne Mountain before plummeting into South Cheyenne Canyon below.

During peak runoff season which is usually in the March-May months, the waterfall is at it’s finest with thousands of gallons of water rushing over the rocks every second! You can also enjoy views from various lookout points along the hiking trail, better views once you are at the base, or even aerial views if you want to hike up to the top where there is a bridge that overlooks the waters. Better yet take pictures at every section and find the best one to make your friends and family jealous.

The waterfall is a series of five tiers with a total drop height of 35 feet. The water bounces off each tier giving quite the rush of cascading waters. One unique feature about Helen Hunt Falls is just how accessible it is. From Highway 24 it’s a quick drive by car or bus to a wide open parking area at the trailhead.

Those who want to make a whole day out of chasing this waterfall, check out some other activities around Seven Falls Park such as rock climbing and hiking trails around. Many enjoy making the rather long trek up to Pikes Peak summit just beyond Seven Falls Park entrance gate (about 1 mile away). There is also various places for overnight tent camping and lakes to fish in.

Once you are off the mountain, one last attraction close to the falls is Garden Of The Gods. You can either take a nice stroll through the area or enjoy a guided tour on hourseback.
